Reading is breathing in. Writing is breathing out. I see writing as a divine act of creation, and all it takes to invoke this power in us is a little courage. How can we inspire each other, as a young literary community, to commit to this powerful, personal act? The work of creative writing is, in so many ways, deep engagement by individuals tested and bolstered by small conversations with mentors and peers. That it'll happen over a distance doesn't change that. I can't wait to see what creations you breathe life into at Cadabra.

Poetry, for me, is a moment crystallized—it's taking a feeling and capturing it in verse, and in the process learning both about yourself and about language. It can come from music, from speech, from a bad night or a good one, from the radio or a breakup or a cup of tea. I'm excited to lead a workshop built around learning how to draw out that poetry, and more importantly learning how to trust yourself and know yourself.

When I write poetry, I write about identity. My identity as a woman, as a Jewish person, as an activist, and so many other things. I believe poetry is personal and l communal, meant for ourselves and to be shared. I believe workshops should be spaces for exploring not just how to be better writers, but how to better understand ourselves, our identities, and our relationships with others that can challenge us to be better poets.

I received my MFA in Fiction Writing from the University of New Hampshire. I write about Judaism, relationships, and family! My passion is teaching—I currently work at Temple Beth Shalom in Needham, MA and built the intensive creative writing program at the URJ Six Points Creative Arts Academy.
